District breaks ground on new Wixom Elementary
Walled Lake Consolidated Schools officially broke ground on the brand-new Wixom Elementary School on Tuesday, November 11.
It was a brisk morning as local officials and dignitaries gathered to celebrate a bright and exciting future for students in Wixom, which was made possible with the passing of the 2024 Bond.

“Today marks the start of a new chapter for Wixom,” said Dr. Michael Lonze, Superintendent of Schools. “We’re bringing a building to life that will fulfill our collaboration, vision and a shared belief we have for all of our children deserving the best learning environment.”
“It’s just so simple right now seeing that there is nothing here,” said Wixom Elementary principal Carrie O’Connell. “It’s just the ground and the soil and then seeing it grow I think is going to be amazing.”
O’Connell started her career in Walled Lake Consolidated Schools as a kindergarten teacher at Wixom Elementary. 18 years later, she’s grateful for the opportunity to lead that building through the process of opening its new home.
“Just thinking back to the room that I had (as a teacher), and the spaces, and just the difference between how kindergarten is laid out at the new building and the collaboration space, I think it’s going to make a tremendous difference (for our students),” said O’Connell.

“I’ve been a parent in this district, a community member and a teacher, and I have never seen a new building from the start to finish, so I feel like this is a very special opportunity for us,” said Alexis Megyesi, who teaches kindergarten at Wixom Elementary. “Just knowing what is coming is going to be so amazing for our kids to have this learning opportunity and these spaces to learn in.”
“The upgrades in technology, and even the space, and the things that we are going to be able to use and do is going to be such a special thing for all of our students,” added Jennifer Mifsud, who teaches second grade at Wixom Elementary.
“Wixom Elementary has been a staple in my family since I became a parent in the school in 2016,” said Wixom PTA President, Leah Nelson. “Today we’re not just breaking ground on a piece of land, we are breaking ground on the future of our students and our community.”
The new Wixom Elementary, located on West Maple Road, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2027.
